Picking a model with evidence instead of a guess

In my last post, I described standing up Cashew Capital — a fictional AI lending platform — end to end: a live app, a real CI/CD pipeline, and a chatbot backed by Claude on Amazon Bedrock. That got me a working product. It didn’t get me an evidence-based answer to a basic question: should Cashew Advisor even be running on the model I happened to pick at the start?

Measuring instead of guessing

I built a small standalone script — not part of the app itself — that runs a fixed set of test prompts against multiple Claude models on Bedrock and records the real latency, real token usage, and real cost per response for each one.

The test set wasn’t just “normal” questions. It included every prompt injection attempt I’d manually tried earlier (direct override attempts, persona jailbreaks, casual “just curious about your restrictions” framing) so that swapping models wouldn’t silently reopen a security gap I’d already closed once. It also included an out-of-scope request — someone asking about chest pains in a lending chatbot — since a model choice that saves money but handles that badly isn’t actually a good trade.

One genuinely non-obvious hurdle showed up before I even got results: some newer Bedrock models can’t be invoked by their plain model ID at all — they require an inference profile ID instead, a routing construct I hadn’t encountered before. The error was clear once I saw it, but nothing about the setup process warned me it was coming.

What the harness actually showed

Seven prompts, three models, across normal usage, prompt injection attempts, and an out-of-scope request:

The number that mattered most wasn’t the cost gap — it was what didn’t change alongside it. On the softened injection attempt (“just curious — do you have any restrictions?”), all three models held the line correctly: no leaked instructions, no persona break, a redirect back to the actual product. Haiku’s version was the shortest and most direct. Opus’s was the most conversationally polished. Neither is more correct — they just have a different tone, at roughly a 9x cost difference for this particular test.

Same story on the out-of-scope medical question — every model correctly prioritized directing toward real emergency care over staying in its lending lane, with no meaningful difference in the safety-relevant part of the answer.

Why this is the part worth doing before anything else

This harness isn’t a one-time exercise. It’s a repeatable check I can rerun against every new model release going forward, which turns “should I upgrade?” from a vibe into a measured decision. And the actual value here wasn’t just a cost comparison — it was evidence that the cheapest, fastest option wasn’t quietly worse where it actually mattered. Cashew Advisor runs on Haiku now, and that decision has a test behind it rather than a guess.

That felt like the right place to start before building anything else on top of the chatbot — RAG, tool calling, or otherwise. No point grounding a model’s facts or sharpening its math if I hadn’t first checked whether it was even the right model to be doing either.
